Some Interesting Facts About Motorhome Circuit Breakers And Fuses

Generally, electric circuit breakers serving a home wiring circuit are intended for the protection and switching of the motorhomes wiring from the high temperatures which may emanate from excess current higher that wire rating passing through it. Circuit breakers have a switch handle which resembles that of a regular switch. However, they are designed in such a way that they break or turn off the circuit when an overloaded condition exists, thus protecting the internal electrical circuit wiring from instances of overheating. Every time a circuit breaker trips off, then there is a problem with the circuit. Even though they rarely get faulty, it is always important to ensure that you are using the correct circuit breakers and in the event that you need to have it replaced, then you should never replace a small circuit breaker with a larger one or vice versa.

There are different types of circuit breakers in the market for motorhomes as well as traditional homes. These include the Single Pole 120V Breaker, the Twin or Tandem Breaker, the Two Pole 240V Breaker, the AFCI Arc Fault Breaker as well as the Circuit breaker panel. The Single Pole 120V breaker is a full size 15amp circuit breaker which is widely used for both outlet and lighting circuits. On the other hand, the full size 20 amp breakers are commonly used for outlet circuits such as those that are in the kitchen. A tandem or twin breaker is designed in such a way that it makes it possible to attach two circuits on the single breaker. This comes in very handy if the electrical panel runs out of room for an additional or extra circuit.

The 2-pole 240V breaker is very similar to having two single pole circuit breakers mounted next to each other. However, the main difference is that the 2 on an off switch handles are normally joined together with some tie bar which does enable both sides of the circuit breaker to turn off even if it is only a single side of the circuit which has encountered a fault or break. By code, you are expected to install the Arc Faulty Circuit Interrupter Circuit (AFCI) in specific areas such as the bedroom. The main purpose of the AFCI is to immediately sense and then turn off the circuit if an arc is detected. Most of the time, an arc is caused by short circuit in the wiring. They significantly reduce the overall risk of shocks and home fires.

Just like a circuit breaker, the main purpose of a fuse is to protect equipment and personnel from serious harm in the event of an over-current. Simply put, an over-current is a condition that exists in an electrical circuit once the normal load current has been exceeded. There are two main over-currents; these are short circuits and over-loads. A short circuit refers to an over-current condition where an irregular or abnormal circuit path with low resistance is introduced into the circuit. This low resistance is very dangerous since it can easily bypass the normal load and create very high currents.

On the other hand, an overload is an over-current condition where there is not short circuit but the current still exceeds the normal full load capacity of the circuit. It thus very important to always use a fuse with the correct amperage for your circuitry, as a rule of thumb, you should also ensure that the voltage rating of the fuse should always be higher than the voltage rating of the circuit it is protecting at any given time. It is also worth mentioning that one should also ensure that the fuse purchased can be used in both AC and DC or just DC.
